G-POWER X5 M TYPHOON: Widebody-SUV mit 750 PS und 980 Nm

G-POWER X5 M TYPHOON: Widebody SUV with 750 hp and 980 Nm

The powerful X5 M is BMW’s flagship SUV, and one of the visibly most
impressive cars in its class.

Taking this to the next level, the G-POWER TYPHOON looks even more extrovert, and comes with a widebody version that gives it and the similarly powered but sleeker X6 M sister an even more masculine and purposeful appearance. Thus equipped, the X5 M TYPHOON takes its place at the top of the SUV tree.

Key Facts: G-POWER X5 M TYPHOON (F85)

• 750 hp / 551 kW at 6,500 rpm (+175 hp / 129 kW)
• 980 Nm at 3000-4500 rpm (+230 Nm)
• Vmax: >300 km/h
• 1/4-mile: 11.5 sec
• G-POWER Bi-Tronik 2 V3 map update: 4,400.- euro
• Vmax increase: 668.- euro
• G-POWER supercharger installation: 3,850.- euro
• G-POWER downpipes with catalysts: 3,860.- euro
• G-POWER titanium exhaust system incl.
4 x 102mm Carbon-Titanium Tailpipes: 5,560.- euro
• G-POWER Widebody kit "TYPHOON": 16,500.- euro
• G-POWER Venturi bonnet "TYPHOON": 3,700.- euro
• G-POWER RS GX6M coilover suspension: 2,292.- euro
• 23-inch forged wheels G-POWER HURRICANE RR, including tyres:
from 8,361.- euro
(All prices are net.)

At first glance, this latest addition to the G-POWER TYPHOON family grabs your attention with its muscular wheel arch flares, which significantly increase the width of the X5 M. The bigger air intakes in the new front bumper give the car a more aggressive face, adding to its more purposeful appearance.

Not installed at the pictured car but optionanally available is a carbon-fibre bonnet which with its Venturi based ‘Dynamic Venting’ system not only looks imposing, but has been designed to work with the air intakes in the front apron to draw excess heat from the engine compartment. The reduction in the working temperature of the twin-turbo V8 engine motor achieved by this airflow system allows the engineers to increase the power output.

Bespoke side skirts visually tie the wider front wheel arches to their counterparts at the rear, while the new rear valance highlights the four 102 mm diametertailpipes of the lightweight G-POWER titanium sports exhaust system.

Named after their top speed record M5, the HURRICANE RR is G-POWER’s signature alloy wheel design. A set of these ultra-light forged alloy wheels in 23- inch diameter, shod with 315/25ZR23 high performance tyres, is used to fill out the wide wheel arches of the X5 M TYPHOON.

Made from forged aircraft-grade aluminium alloy, these wheels are available in three different colours with a choice of high-sheen surface or as a polished variant - the G-POWER DIAMONDCUT. A unique option is the possibility of having the owner’s personal signature added to the wheels.

To provide the performance implied by the visual gravitas of the cars appearance G-POWER boosts the performance to 750 hp (551 kW) and 980 Nm of torque. This serious power output increase is delivered by a combination of turbocharger modifications and the application of G-POWER’s Bi-Tronik 2 V3 engine control software, customised to the individual engine.

The standard compressor wheel in each modified turbocharger housing is replaced with a larger and more efficient bespoke unit developed by G-POWER and manufactured in-house on their CNC milling machine.

While the new wheel is larger, it is also lighter. The reduced inertia results in faster spin up and improved throttle response. At the other end of each turbocharger units, a more efficient exhaust turbine wheel helps to reduce exhaust gas temperatures, allowing higher boost pressures for increased power output. Both wheels are dynamically balanced for silent and reliable service.

Finally, a reduction in exhaust back-pressure is achieved through the use of bespoke stainless steel downpipes leading to a titanium sports exhaust system terminating in a rear silencer with four large exit pipes.

Florida Car Dealers Say Insurers Halting Policies Ahead of Irma
Bloomberg reports that insurers including Progressive Corp. and Allstate Corp. have stopped issuing policies on new cars in certain Florida counties, hindering vehicle sales days before Hurricane Irma is forecast to hit the state. The companies may be overreacting to losses incurred last month related to Hurricane Harvey and refusing to issue coverage, Ted Smith, the president of the Florida Automobile Dealers Association, said by phone. State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co. is still issuing coverage and waiting until a national hurricane advisory before halting new policies, he said. “If you take us out of business for a week before a storm even hits and maybe a week after, you can imagine the impact, not just on consumers who are inconvenienced but the state’s economic resources,” Smith said. “I’m urging through our public officials that they talk to these insurance companies and make sure they follow the policy of State Farm – wait until there’s imminent danger before you stop writing cars.” For more, click here
VW Will Unveil EV Crossover Concept
Volkswagen brand said it will show a further developed version of its I.D. Crozz full-electric SUV/crossover at next week's Frankfurt auto show. According to Automotive News, the updated concept better reveals what a future production version will look like. The concept's front and rear end designs, in particular, point more in the direction of a production model, VW said in a statement on Wednesday. VW said that the concept has a "highly contemporary SUV look" with a gloss black roof and a lounge-like interior with four "variable" individual seats. The concept and its production versions will be underpinned by VW's new MEB architecture for electric vehicles, which allows the batteries to be integrated into the floor, freeing up space in the interior. VW showed the first concept of the coupe-styled I.D. Crozz at the Shanghai auto show earlier this year, saying it heralded a production version due to go on sale in 2020. For more on VW’s new EV crossover concept, click here
House OKs Bill to Allow Thousands of Self-Driving Cars
Automakers would each be allowed to operate up to 100,000 self-driving cars per year on U.S. roads, and states would be prevented from passing laws to prevent them from doing so under a bill that was approved Wednesday by the U.S. House of Representatives.According to The Detroit News, the measure, approved on a voice vote, would allow the Secretary of Transportation to grant exemptions to federal motor vehicle rules that require cars to have human operators. Initially, 25,000 cars per automaker could be operated if companies can prove they meet existing safety standards for traditional cars. After a 12-month period, the number of exemptions per manufacturer would increase to 50,000, and it would go up to 100,000 in the third and fourth years. The current limit for such exemptions to federal auto standards is 2,500 cars for two years at a time. For more on a self-driving car bill passed by the U.S. House of Representatives yesterday, click here
All-New Jaguar Land Rover Cars to Have Electric Option From 2020
All new Jaguar Land Rover cars will be available in an electric or hybrid version from 2020, Britain’s biggest carmaker said on Thursday, as it speeds up plans to electrify its model range.According to Reuters, last year, the company, owned by India’s Tata Motors said it would offer greener versions of half of its new line-up by 2020, but it has now ramped up its plans. Jaguar Land Rover, which showcased its first electric model in 2016, said it would release a range of powertrain options over the coming years. The automaker, which built nearly 550,000 of Britain’s 1.7 million cars last year, has said it wants to build electric models in its home market but a number of factors need to be in place first, including support from government and academia. For more on Jaguar Land Rover’s electric plans, click here
Nissan CEO Looking for More Sustainable Targets
Four months into his job, Nissan Motor Co.’s new chief executive wants the company to slow down, worried its rush to expand sales was pushing it off track. According to The Wall Street Journal, for the past five years Nissan chased an ambitious goal set by then-Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn of achieving both an 8 percent share of global car sales and an 8 percent profit margin. It fell short on both. The plan stretched Nissan too far, Mr. Ghosn’s handpicked replacement, Hiroto Saikawa, said in an interview Thursday, calling for more sustainable targets. “We are going to have steady and solid growth—this is the message,” he said. Since taking over in June, Mr. Saikawa has been working on a new midterm plan. One pillar is cutting back on discounts, which he said were feeding the impression that Nissan vehicles were worth less than the competition. For more on Nissan’s new strategy, click here

Innovation of the Month:

Integrating NEPA and Permitting

Integrating National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and permitting allows the various environmental reviews and permitting procedures required for Federal-Aid Highway Program projects to be performed at the same time rather than sequentially.
The resulting synchronization can help transportation agencies shorten project delivery time, increase efficiency, save resources, and produce better environmental outcomes:
  • Integrating NEPA and permitting processes reduces the time and complexity of project development while ensuring projects receive appropriate coordinated review.
  • Synchronization improves the efficiency and effectiveness of the project development, mitigation, and decision-making process.
  • A synchronized review process reduces duplicative efforts, leading to time and cost savings.
NEPA and Permitting Spotlight
Integration of NEPA and permitting processes is not just for use on large projects. This flexible, scalable approach can also be applied at the program level, to small projects, or to parts of large projects.

Colorado Uses Analysis to Quantify Safety Performance

Before proceeding with a project to remove a 2-mile bottleneck on I-225 by restriping the road, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) wanted to know how the project would affect the I-225 and downstream I-25 corridors. The Every Day Counts (EDC) data-driven safety analysis (DDSA) team worked with CDOT on a predictive analysis using the Interactive Highway Safety Design Model (IHSDM), software analysis tools that support DDSA, to quantify the potential change in safety performance. For information on using IHSDM for DDSA, contact Jerry Roche of the FHWA Office of Safety or John McFadden of the FHWA Resource Center.

South Carolina Explores Community Connections

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) is pursuing the EDC community connections initiative by considering new ways to accomplish transportation improvements. FHWA staff delivered a workshop on performance-based practical designthat challenged participants to think beyond cost-based choices on projects and use performance data to make informed decisions in balance with community needs. The workshop showcased results of implementing practical design to improve safety and operations on Arizona State Route 264Kansas State Route K-177, and Minnesota Highway 10. Contact Robert Mooney of the FHWA Office of Infrastructure to bring a workshop to your State.

Road Diets Increase Business in Retail Shops

Business owners cite road diets as a reason for increased business in their retail shops, according to a New Jersey video that highlights the effect of roadway reconfiguration on commercial growth. The video is one of the technical assistance materials FHWA provided to Bike Walk RVA, a Virginia program that supports bike- and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, to introduce potential road diet projects to Richmond residents and business owners.
